Our third hot and sunny day teaching in Lira! The team were divided between the University and Lira referral hospital today. Mel, Sarah and Emily had a difficult start at the University as the second year students were revising frantically for some exams and less receptive to attending teaching. Despite this a group of 16 students that came enjoyed a very useful session on communication skills followed by a practical teaching on manual handling and prevention of pressure sores.

Over at the referral hospital the children’s ward was extremely busy so I was able to do ward teaching with the staff all morning followed by an afternoon teaching session on clinical examination of children to student clinical medical officers (like the physician assistant posts in USA). Sally had a very productive morning teaching neonatal resuscitation to a varied group of staff on the maternity unit at their request. She was requested then to attend an emergency Caesarian section because of severe fetal distress, but the baby was was born in good condition!

Emily also taught chest examination and physio to a group of nursing students at the hospital in the afternoon.

On the way home we met the beautiful baby photographed with Emily yesterday with her adoptive grandmother looking very beautiful! Mum was already back at work in the market first day post delivery!
