Another amazing day at Lira university hospital.
It started with Frankie delivering the grand round and introducing the new drug chart that she and the Lira university team have developed together. The concept was very well received as several of the doctors had used similar drug charts at other hospitals and gave us hope that the university hospital will adopt the use of the chart and embed it into standard patient care.
Ally and Sophie spent the day teaching year 3 students paediatric health and resuscitation. The students were engaged and motivated and really participated in the sessions, however there were frequent interruptions from candidates busy campaigning for the student elections on Saturday – these were very noisy affairs and our own Sophy Boots announcement that she was willing to stand was received with huge cheers.
Sally and Amy spent the afternoon teaching neonatal resuscitation to small groups which the students loved- they really enjoy the practical sessions. This was a topic the students had requested and were very enthused by.
Sarah, Frankie and Amy went to theatre for an elective caesarean. Sarah was scrub nurse and first assistant whilst Frankie talked through a new anaesthetic chart with the anaesthetist and Amy looked after the newborn as soon as it was delivered. It was a fascinating experience for all and we are delighted to report mother and baby are doing well.
Now back at base and busy planning for another full day of teaching, both formal session at the university and on the wards at the referral hospital.
