Frankie is unstoppable – even on a Sunday.

Whilst the rest of the team deserted her to indulge in other pursuits, she had another long session with Betty, the anaesthetist from Lira hospital.

Betty has just returned from a course in Kampala on HDU set up in Uganda. So she and Frankie are well on track with the mission to get the HDU up and running at Lira hospital and give each other much support.The hurdles are significant, but seem manageable.

Our fourth team member,Jamie, arrived early afternoon after a very eventful journey; not only was the flight delayed so much he had to spend the night in Kampala, but Arnold’s van also experienced a sudden brake failure. Arnold dealt with this with great aplomb – expertly using the hand brake without batting an eyelid and magically summoning up a swarm of mechanics (or is it a spanner of them?) in the middle of nowhere to get it fixed within the hour.

Meanwhile Lesley and Judy joined Chris and Gudrun (neonatologist and obstetrics respectively) for a day out in Chobe. It was a unique experience to go walking off piste with a guide amongst the giraffe, kob and warthogs, and to wander gently along the side of the wild Nile bubbling with hippos. There was much opportunity for talking shop and forging friendships.

A very happy day rounded off with stoney’s ginger beer, Nile beer and chilli bean stew.
