Another lovely sun baked day and a busy breakfast under the shade of the tree.

Leslie got to the university by 8am and had a good session with the first years on midwifery and antenatal care with lots of lively group discussion. Peter had a postprandial nap before the long journey back to Kampala with Hilary and Antoinette. Judy and Frankie off to the hospital. Theatres were delighted with their instruments and a surgical/anaesthetic book – they don’t have any books, and there are few in the library are on core subjects.

In the afternoon Frankie had another good session with Basics course. Judy and Leslie taught suturing to a small group of second year students, a lovely mixed bunch – some school leavers, some practicing midwives. They enjoy teaching each other.

We came back to a delicious spicy chicken meal at the restaurant and nattered.

Lesley went to Lira University to facilitate a teaching session on maternal mortality, to year 1 student’s, entitled ‘Why did Mrs X die?’ and student’s discussed the barriers to women accessing maternity services in low resource settings and locally. Particular reference was made to the barriers that student’s identified from their own experiences of working in the local maternity unit and they discussed possible ways to address these both now and in their future roles as nurse/midwives.

The session was drawn to a close by raising awareness of respectful maternity care, the universal rights of childbearing women and the ongoing global work of The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood www.whiteribbonalliance.org/respectfulcare an initiative that many countries have now signed up to including Uganda.
