Monday 26th September 2016

After a quick breakfast and another change of plan we headed off the Lira University. Frankie’s dementia seemed to be kicking in and everyone seemed to know who she was but she had the occasional lapse in memory! We received a warm welcome and tour of the facilities and saw how the University is growing and expanding. We met 2 classes of students and some extremely enthusiastic staff both from Uganda and America.

A lightning stop at the market to gather supplies for lunch and a make shift picnic in a someone’s office we met the Clinical Director of the Hospital. We were given a tour of the hospital and met many of the of the sisters and senior nurses and Drs. Then it was divide and conquer with Frankie and Liv doing pop up teaching of students and meeting to start the Basic DHS course and Ally and Sandy going to the wards to introduce ourselves.

The hospital facilities were a step up from Wau apart from paediatrics as only children under 5 could go on the paediatric ward, with all others on the adult ward. The students were all on there 1st days so looked terrified as we walked on to the wards and there were 16 of them on some wards with one nurse “mentoring” them.

Overall all of us have felt very welcome by everyone and everyone has been so enthusiastic about us being here and tonight we have a business meeting with VSO who are doing the Breath Easy course here in Lira.
